Information report about Sir Edmund Hillary  *



Sir Edmund Hillary was born in 20 July 1919 and he was the first person to climb to the top of Mount Everest. He was interested in mountaineering since he was in secondary school. Then he made his first major climb in 1939, reaching the summit of Mount Ollivier. Sir Edmund Hillary also served in the Royal New Zealand Air Force as a navigator during World War 2, then he traveled to the North pole.

Before Sir Edmund Hillary climb Mount Everest, he took the route which travels to Mount Everest. But the route to Mount Everest was closed by chinese controlled Tibet,
during the trip in 1952 to the Alps, he discovered that he and his friend , George had been invited to British in 1953 and immediately accepted. 400 people, 362 porters, 20 guides and 10,000 lbs of baggage.


It was a big teamwork, they are also setting up base camp in 1953. Working slowly to set up their final camp at the south col at the height of 25,900 feet. On 26 May they decided to turn back when they are climbing because the oxygen system failed. They had reached the South Summit, coming with the height of 300 feet, The snow and the wind held them up at the South Col for 2 days.


They had reached Mount Everest’s 29,028 feet summit, and that part is the highest point on the whole planet. 15 minutes later, Sir Edmund Hillary took a great photo about him and his ice axe, but he said that he didn’t want it . After climbing Mount Everest for 2 days, he was going to take a flight to Antarctica but he had to work commitments in the United States. So his friend , Peter Mulgrew took the flight instead but the aircraft crashed into Mount Erebus in Antarctica.


On 11 January 2008, Sir Edmund Hillary died of heart attack at the Auckland city Hospital at 9 o’clock in the morning at the age of 88. The Prime Minister Helen Clark announced his death at 11:20 am, his family was expecting him home when he was in hospital, but Sir Edmund Hillary died about that time. On 22 January 2008 they all started a funeral about Sir Edmund Hillary, his death was recognized by the lowering of the New Zealand flags the half mast.
